Mother of pearl is the common name given to the smooth shell interior of mainly pearl oysters, freshwater pearl mussels, or abalone (sometimes called 'ear-shells'). It has a unique iridescence, created as light interacts with wafer thin layers of nacre secretion deposited throughout the life of the mollusc.
