What Are Freshwater Pearls?

Freshwater pearls are genuine pearls formed inside freshwater mussels. They develop when the mussel produces layers of nacre around an irritant inside its shell over time. Valued for their soft lustre and natural beauty, freshwater pearls are widely used in jewellery including necklaces, earrings, bracelets and pendants.

How Freshwater Pearls Are Formed

Most freshwater pearls used in jewellery today are cultured pearls. This means the pearl-growing process is carefully started by pearl farmers, after which the mussel naturally forms the pearl by coating the irritant with layers of nacre. Once harvested, the pearls are cleaned, sorted and selected for use in jewellery.

Freshwater Pearls and Natural Pearls

Natural pearls form entirely by chance in the wild and are extremely rare. Most freshwater pearls used in modern jewellery are cultured pearls, meaning the process is carefully started by pearl farmers. They are still genuine pearls formed naturally inside the mussel, but culturing makes pearl production more reliable and sustainable.

What Does Pearl Grade AA Mean?

Freshwater pearls are often graded according to qualities such as lustre, surface quality and overall appearance. Grade AA pearls are generally considered good-quality pearls with attractive lustre and relatively clean surfaces, making them well suited to jewellery.

Why Freshwater Pearls Are Popular in Jewellery

Freshwater pearls are loved for their soft glow, versatility and natural beauty. They are available in a range of shapes and sizes, from classic round pearls to distinctive Baroque pearls with more organic forms. Because each pearl develops naturally, no two are exactly the same, giving freshwater pearl jewellery its own individual character.
