What is Sterling Silver?

Nugget of silver

Sterling silver is a silver alloy widely used in jewellery and decorative objects. It contains 92.5% pure silver combined with 7.5% other metals, most commonly copper. Pure silver on its own is too soft for everyday jewellery, so adding a small proportion of other metals improves strength while keeping silver’s bright appearance. This combination gives sterling silver the durability needed for jewellery that can be worn and enjoyed every day.

Why Sterling Silver is used in Jewellery

The small amount of metal added to sterling silver improves its strength and durability, making it suitable for jewellery that can be worn regularly. Copper is most commonly used because it strengthens the metal while preserving silver’s bright appearance and natural lustre.

Some manufacturers may adjust the alloy slightly to improve properties such as hardness, workability or resistance to tarnishing, while still maintaining the recognised sterling silver standard. This balance between purity and durability is what makes sterling silver one of the most widely used precious metals in jewellery.

What does '925' mean on silver?

The number '925' stamped on jewellery means the metal is sterling silver. It indicates the item contains 92.5% pure silver, the recognised standard used in quality silver jewellery.

Origins of 'Sterling Silver'

Hanseatic LeagueThe term “Sterling Silver” refers to silver of the 925 grade and has been used in England since at least the 13th century. The word “sterling” is believed to come from the Old Norman French esterlin (meaning “little star”) or the Old English steorra, both suggesting strength and reliability.

Another explanation links the term to “Easterling Silver”, a name used for high-quality silver coins produced in parts of eastern Germany. Merchants in England valued these coins for their consistent silver content, and the term gradually evolved into the word “sterling” used today.

Like all silver, sterling silver can gradually develop tarnish over time. With the right care it can easily be restored to its original shine. To keep sterling silver jewellery looking its best, it can be gently cleaned with a specialist silver polishing cloth designed to remove tarnish and restore shine.
